The trick to great makeup application is creating an effortlessly beautiful look. Learn how to apply makeup that works to your advantage without looking overdone.

The verdict is in – a natural look is best when it comes to makeup. Those who are great at applying makeup don’t even look like they’re wearing it; instead appearing naturally beautiful. Of course, this kind of skill doesn’t happen without a little effort, and a little experimentation. Try your hand at the natural look by trying these tips.

For Glowing Skin

With so many makeup products now on the market, there’s really no excuse for not buying a foundation that matches skin color perfectly. The biggest barrier to a natural look is cakey foundation that doesn’t match the complexion.

When shopping for the right foundation, it often helps to bring along an honest friend. Or if shopping alone, ask a salesperson for their uncensored opinion. Put a dab of foundation on the inside of the wrist, where skin is lightest. If it doesn’t match – try a different color.

Having chosen the best foundation, apply a moisturizer before slathering it on. A moisturizer will complement the foundation by making the skin look dewy, without being too oily. Now it’s time to experiment with blushers and bronzers. Experiment to your heart’s content, but remember – when it comes to makeup, less is more.

Enhancing your Eyes

A common eye-makeup mistake is overdoing the eyeshadow or eyeliner to the point where you can barely even find the eyes. Don’t hide your eyes – flaunt them!

Oftentimes, a light eyeshadow coupled with carefully applied mascara is all you need. The eyeshadow should be complementary of your skin tone, often in shades of pink, beige, brown, or even white. Apply the eyeshadow so that the color blends in seamlessly with the skin around the eyes.

The most important step in creating a natural-looking eye is careful application of the mascara. Well applied mascara can make the eyes look brighter and bigger. On the other hand, too much mascara, or mascara that’s been hastily globbed on, will create that dreaded ‘spider eye’ look. Take as much time as needed to apply the mascara, giving attention to every, single eyelash. Spend some extra time around the outer corners of your eyelashes to create the coveted baby-doll effect.

Creating Soft, Full Lips

As with choosing the right foundation, the key to a natural-looking pout is constantly experimenting with different colors. Oftentimes, it’s easy to find a color worth coveting, but in a shade that’s just a bit too dark. To make it look natural, mix with a bit of colorless lip balm.

To make the lipstick last, find a complementary lip liner and apply before the lipstick. Covering the lips in liner will help the color stick better, and it means not as much lipstick is needed – so lips won’t look so goopy.

Becoming Beautiful From the Inside-Out

Personal health is more important than any other kind of beauty regime. Eating a balanced diet full of grains, fruits, and vegetables, and drinking plenty of water and green tea will keep skin clear and eyes bright.

Eating foods rich in vitamin E, such as leafy greens and some lean meats, will help your hair. Vitamin E can help increase circulation to the scalp area, making hair longer and stronger as it grows in. Vitamin E has also been credited with healthy-looking skin, thought to make it look smoother and keep wrinkles at bay for longer.

Regular exercise is a must for maintaining healthy skin. Exercising releases anti-stress chemicals that help neutralize the stress response. Since many cases of acne are caused by stress, it makes sense that exercise would lead to clearer skin. And it’s a given that a toned, fit body can make anyone look younger than they really are!

Having fun with makeup can make us all feel like kids again. Enjoy applying your makeup – keep what works, don’t keep what doesn’t and have a good friend along to share their honest opinion all the way.
